What exactly was Operation Mincemeat?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the midst of World War II, the Allies were planning to invade Europe from the south. The problem: The Nazis knew something was coming... but they didn't know where.<\/strong>The real objective was Sicily, but they needed to convince Hitler that they would attack from another direction: Greece or Sardinia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was born one of the greatest deception operations in modern military history. And the main weapon was not a tank, nor an airplane, nor a cipher. It was a corpse dressed as a British officer<\/strong>, floating off the coast of Spain with false documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did they do it?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The idea was conceived by the British naval intelligence team (MI5 and the Royal Navy), specifically by Ewen Montagu<\/strong> and Charles Cholmondeley<\/strong>, inspired by a note called the Trout Memo<\/em>, written by a young officer named Ian Fleming<\/strong>. Yes, the same one who would later write James Bond<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plan consisted of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Obtain the body of a man with no family or public ties.
    <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Disguise it as him Major William Martin<\/strong>, an alleged British officer.
    <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Placing secret documents detailing a fake invasion by Greece in his briefcase.
    <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Leaving the body on the coast of Huelva, Spain, a neutral zone with known ties to German agents.
    <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    And it worked. The documents fell into the hands of the Nazis, who swallowed the bait.<\/strong>Hitler diverted troops from Sicily to Greece and Sardinia, weakening the Royalist defenses\u2026 and facilitating the Allies' entry into Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
