Meanwhile, in Spain... not a single glass of manzanilla in honor of the cause. Why? Because no one has told us that <strong>Spain played a key role\u2014key, not anecdotal\u2014in the independence of the United States.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, yes. You read that right. <em>Historic breaking news:<\/em> <strong>Spain helped the U.S. win its War of Independence\u2026 and it did so with weapons, money, ships, and even epic battles.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet, in Hollywood movies, not a single mention of them. Nothing. Just handsome Frenchmen and colonists with sweaty wigs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But don&#039;t worry. But... oh, the British! We had them in our sights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So when the American colonies decided to rebel against His Majesty, <strong>Spain saw a golden opportunity<\/strong>: weaken Great Britain <strong>without getting fully involved in the revolutionary party<\/strong>. Or so we thought\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Result: we ended up up to our necks in the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Spain provided the money, gunpowder and cannonballs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Military and logistical support:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While George Washington was racking his brains trying to figure out how to pay for uniforms and rifles, <strong>Spain entered \u201cAliExpress Prime independence\u201d mode<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Weapons, ammunition, uniforms, blankets, food\u2026 everything free (or almost).<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He sent aid from Cuba, New Orleans and Havana.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And even <strong>a secret fleet crossed the Atlantic<\/strong> with what was necessary for the settlers to continue shooting.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Financial support:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spain <strong>lent millions of reales in eights<\/strong> (yes, those pirate coins), without which the war would have ended\u2026 badly and soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is to say, <strong>Spain was the \u201cofficial sponsor\u201d of American independence.<\/strong> No interest charges. No need to ask for our logo on the flag.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/hlcomedytours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Espana-en-la-Guerra-de-Independiencia-Americana-2.jpg\" alt=\"Espa\u00f1a\" class=\"wp-image-27345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hlcomedytours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Espana-en-la-Guerra-de-Independiencia-Americana-2.jpg 700w, https:\/\/hlcomedytours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Espana-en-la-Guerra-de-Independiencia-Americana-2-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hlcomedytours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Espana-en-la-Guerra-de-Independiencia-Americana-2-18x10.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Spain didn&#039;t just help: it fought!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, yes. <strong>Spanish soldiers confronted the British directly.<\/strong> But not in Boston or Philadelphia, but in the south of the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The forgotten hero: Bernardo de G\u00e1lvez<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A name that should sound as good as George Washington\u2026 but doesn&#039;t even appear on cookies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Governor of Louisiana<\/strong> and brilliant strategist.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He conquered British strongholds such as <strong>Baton Rouge<\/strong>, <strong>Mobile<\/strong> and the jewel in the crown: <strong>Pensacola<\/strong>, in West Florida.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He made the English have to fight in <strong>several fronts at once<\/strong>, weakening their position in the rebel colonies.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>He did so much for the US that in the United States Congress <strong>there is a portrait of him<\/strong> hanging since 2014. Let&#039;s see how many Spaniards can say that!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>And in addition, Spain blocked the ports<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Spanish Navy <strong>cut off the naval tap to the British<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Maritime blockades.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supply interruption.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surprise attacks.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All this forced the English to <strong>divide their fleet<\/strong> and protect many more areas, leaving the rebel colonies less guarded\u2026 and more ready to shout \u201cFreedom!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/hlcomedytours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Espana-en-la-Guerra-de-Independiencia-Americana-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hlcomedytours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Espana-en-la-Guerra-de-Independiencia-Americana-3.jpg 700w, https:\/\/hlcomedytours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Espana-en-la-Guerra-de-Independiencia-Americana-3-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hlcomedytours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Espana-en-la-Guerra-de-Independiencia-Americana-3-18x10.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>And what did Spain gain from all this?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>S<\/strong><strong><em>happy spoiler:<\/em><\/strong><strong> We recover lost territories<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>West Florida returned to Spanish hands.<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We also recovered <strong>Minorca<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And we saw how the greatest imperial enemy was left <strong>touched and sunk<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, international recognition was conspicuous by its absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So\u2026 why doesn\u2019t anyone tell it?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Good question. Some possible theories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Because Spain did not support <em>ideologically<\/em> independence (only tactically).<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Because we don&#039;t send troops to Lexington or Concord.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Because Hollywood prefers three-cornered hats to tricorn hats with feathers.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or because, simply, <strong>No one has told it properly.
